Hickling-Nye papers, 1796-1855.

Diaries and correspondence of Thomas Hickling (1745-1834) and Thomas Hickling, Jr. (1781-1875) of St. Michael, the Azores, and correspondence of Amelia Hickling Nye of Cambridge and New Bedford, Mass. Diaries include a typescript of the journal of Thomas Hickling, Sr., describing a trip to England and France, 1 June - 21 October 1796, and two travel diaries of Thomas Hickling, Jr. The first, kept from 9 Sept. - [Oct.] 1833 describes a trip from New Bedford through New York State to Quebec and back to Boston; the second, kept from 8 Feb. - [April] 1844 describes a voyage from New Bedford down the east coast, through the southern states, and up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to Pittsburgh and on to Philadelphia. Correspondence includes letters from Amelia Hickling Nye to her daughter, Emma Chambers Jones, 1845-1855, noting local news, family news, and social engagements; a letter from Nye to Thomas Hickling, Jr., 1855, describing recent debates over slavery and slave laws; and a typescript copy of a letter from Thomas Hickling, Jr., to his sister (probably Catherine Green Hickling Prescott), 1845, discussing his personal business affairs and his life in the Azores.
